NOTE: The DW 1601 requires a WiGig wireless antenna not found in systems that did not ship with the DW1601 card. Adding a DW 1601 to a system that did not ship with the card would require the replacement of the LCD back cover / wireless antenna assembly with a WiGig compatible antenna and removal of any other Bluetooth card (DW 380 for example). Wilocity will be the first company to market with WiGig technology - a 60 GHz band wireless system. But I would not really expect it to make a reasonable wireless network for a whole house.

July 3, 2014. Qualcomm Inc. has announced that it has taken two major steps to enable the industry to deliver multi-gigabit wireless with 60-GHz technology for mobile, computing, and networking devices. First, Qualcomm has completed its acquisition of Wilocity, a leader in development of 60-GHz wireless chipsets based on the IEEE 802.11ad standard, also known as WiGig technology.

Second, the company is delivering a family of tri-band platforms that combine Qualcomm Atheros Wi-Fi and WiGig solutions to significantly increase performance and enable cutting-edge wireless applications. The initial tri-band platform is a reference design based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810, which is the world’s first mobile platform designed to support WiGig to enable applications such as 4K video streaming, peer-to-peer content sharing, networking, wireless docking, and backing up entire media libraries in seconds. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor is a product of Qualcomm Technologies Inc.

Mobile data traffic is expected to grow significantly in the coming years, and Qualcomm and its subsidiaries are charging ahead to meet this demand with a combination of wireless innovations. While 802.11ac enables Gigabit Wi-Fi networks to offload mobile traffic, 60-GHz technology brings multigigabit speeds, significant capacity improvements, and power efficiency that are integral to meeting the challenges posed by next generation media applications. With the integration of WiGig into its mobile platforms, Qualcomm will enable mobile devices to provide near-instantaneous access to the cloud and allow for greater cellular network offload. 802.11ad also extends the Qualcomm VIVE portfolio and builds on the company’s recent initiatives to revolutionize Wi-Fi networks with11ac 2.0 solutions with MU-MIMO.

Qualcomm’s acquisition of Wilocity fits right into paying off the 1000x vision. Competitively, this also puts Qualcomm in the 60 Ghz drivers seat by an estimated 6 to 12 months. Another big round of fund-raising for an Israeli startup: The startup Wilocity, headquartered in the town of Caesarea midway between Tel Aviv and Haifa and is developing the WiGig, the world's fastest WiFi network, has in recent weeks completed a fourth round of fund-raising, bringing in $35 million.

Qualcomm’s mobile and networking innovation, combined with Wilocity’s position in 60-GHz technology, are designed to provide the needed coverage, performance, capacity, and compatibility to enable the next generation of home and business networks. 60-GHz technology complements traditional Wi-Fi with zones of ultrahigh-speed connectivity while expanding the wireless use cases for high-end mobile, computing, and consumer electronics devices. Tri-band Wi-Fi solutions from Qualcomm Atheros integrate the multigigabit performance of 802.11ad operating in the 60-GHz spectrum band along with 802.11ac that operates in the 5-GHz band and 802.11b/g/n in the 2.4-GHz band. In combination, 11ad and 11ac create the most powerful and efficient wireless solution in the market; coupling the whole home coverage of 11ac with the in-area multi-gigabit connectivity of 11ad will provide users with a superior connected experience.

Qualcomm Atheros has been an investor in Wilocity since 2008 and worked closely with Wilocity to develop and distribute tri-band solutions for the computing market since 2011. This successful collaboration is now expanding into Qualcomm’s mobile and networking designs, with the Snapdragon 810 becoming the world’s first mobile platform to support tri-band wireless. As a result, the next generation of smartphones and tablets will offer new streaming, synching and storage capabilities.

Cisco has taken a minority investment in the Israeli chipmaker Wilocity with the goal of speeding up enterprise adoption of the latest and fastest generation of WiFi, 802.11ad.

The Wi-Fi Alliance and others have been working on certifying devices for the latest generation of WiFi for more than two years, but the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc. (IEEE) just finalized 802.11ad, also called WiGig, in January. (See: Wi-Fi Alliance, WiGig Align to Make WiFi Super Fast.)

Since then, Wilocity has emerged as a leader in the space in developing 60GHz multi-gigabit wireless chipsets that can run on tri-band WiFi. Intel Corp. (Nasdaq: INTC) is the other big name working on it, but Wilocity already has products up and running and is expanding its ecosystem with partnerships like this one with Cisco Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: CSCO) and a deal with Qualcomm Inc. (Nasdaq: QCOM) on the client side.

Bob Friday, CTO for the enterprise networking group at Cisco, wouldn't reveal the size of his company's investment in Wilocity, but he did say they plan to increase the performance and capacity of wireless networking in the enterprise to enable new video and collaboration services.

From a technology perspective, Wilocity's chips support tri-band WiFi running 802.11ad in the 60GHz spectrum band alongside 802.11a/n/ac in the 5GHz band and 802.11b/g/n in the 2.2GHz band. The reason all three are required is that 802.11ad brings the speed but is short-range WiFi, so it can't penetrate most walls and people. Its chips can automatically switch from the 60GHz channel to the next best available one when needed. The vendor is promising data rates of up to 5 Gbit/s, or up to 10 times faster than mainstream WiFi. (See: FCC to Enable Fast Streaming With New 60GHz Rules.)

Since 802.11ad was ratified this year, Wilocity already has chipsets in several ultrabooks and devices, including the Dell 6430u Ultrabook, D500 Wireless Dock, and Precision M4800 and M6800 Workstations. CEO Tal Tamir says we should expect mobile-phone grade chipsets next year, with smartphones launching by the end of 2014.

The zippier WiFi is also attracting interest in the connected home, but Tamir says there's a greater sense of urgency in the enterprise. Here, the networks are dense, companies are moving to cloud storage, and a certain level of performance is required. (See: Mobile Video Goes on the Road and 60GHz Can Too Run a Home Network.)

The enterprise is an important strategic market for Cisco, too, and it's working hard to get multimode small cells out the door for its business customers. Wilocity and Cisco are working on 802.11ad proof-of-concept trials for WiFi-enabled cellular small cells. Friday says we should expect commercial small cells from Cisco next year. He didn't confirm whether the 802.11ad small cells would support 3G and 4G LTE, but he did say '.11ad and LTE will start to merge next year.' (See: Cisco: Multimode Small Cells Coming Early 2014.)
